MCKEOUGH PREPARES FOR BASIC TRAINING

Senior Thomas McKeough will be putting his best foot forward as he finishes his senior year and begins his journey in the United States’ Army; Thanks to football and wrestling, he is more than ready.

For the past 11 years, McKeough has been pursuing his love for football by being part of Patriots and Little Slaters. McKeough originally discovered his love for football after his uncle inspired him to give the sport a try.

“I like football because it’s the ultimate team sport, no other sport compares to the bond that is made while you’re in the trenches,” McKeough said.

McKeough has played a major role on the high school’s team as left guard and defensive tackle and has left a mark on the lives of his teammates and on the football field.

“Tommy is one of the hardest workers on the team. He gives it everything he has and will hit as hard as he can every play,” teammate Brandon Nemeth said. “He hits very, very hard if you were wondering.”

Although the Slaters haven’t always had the perfect record, over the past four years one win stands out in McKeough’s mind.

“My favorite football memory is when we came back from a 24-0 deficit against Northwestern and won 34-27 my junior year,” McKeough said. “I’m going to miss strapping up my pads and hitting people.”

Promptly after football ends, wrestling begins, keeping McKeough fit throughout the winter. McKeough’s wrestling career began in the seventh grade and has flourished into being his favorite sport.

“I love the physical and mental challenge when you’re on the mat all by yourself. The feeling is unlike any other,” McKeough said.

Wrestling at 285, McKeough dominates his matches with quick thinking and agile moves.

“Tommy works hard at practice, he moves well for a heavyweight, and he never gives up,” teammate Haakon Mathewson said.

When McKeough’s sports career eventually comes to an end, he will prepare himself for his career in the military.

“Since I was very young, I’ve always wanted to be a soldier. I want to give back to my country and change somebody’s life for the better,” McKeough said.

The support McKeough has received from his family, coaches, and peers has helped encourage him to pursue his dream to enlist in the military and eventually become a federal agent.

“Through everything my family and friends have always looked out for me and have always had my future in their best interest,” McKeough said.

With his basic training departure date of June 19 to Fort Benning, Georgia quickly approaching, McKeough reflects on his high school memories and will make the most of the rest of his senior year.

“I am going to miss being able to see my friends and having fun with them on a daily basis because soon I won’t be seeing any of them,” McKeough said.

McKeough must complete the grueling 14 week long basic training to achieve his goal.

“I am going to try to become a member of the 75 Ranger Regiment. To make it, you have to be physically fit and have a very good work ethic,” McKeough said.

After graduation, McKeough will make the Slater Nation, and America, proud as he begins his journey as a solider.
