The Bangor Slaters recently fought in their 98th rivalry game against the Pen Argyl Green Knights. After a back and forth battle, the Slaters came out on top defeating the Green Knights 27-21 Saturday, October 28.

With Bangor’s first two possessions, junior running back Garrett DeBoer scored the first touchdowns of the game, putting Bangor up 12-0.

“I think those two huge drives gave us the momentum we needed to start out. They were very important to the outcome of the game,” DeBoer said.

The Knights running back Logan Sterner responded with 3 consecutive touchdowns putting the Green Knights up 21-12 at the halfway point of the 3rd quarter.

Pen Argyl had momentum, however, the Slaters scored the game’s final 15 points.

Junior fullback Joey Schrader ran for a 46-yard touchdown making the score a close 21-19 with the Knights still holding the lead.

“When they called me to run the ball I knew I was scoring. I wouldn’t have done it without the line. They made the perfect hole for me to run through,” Schrader said.

Shortly after, the most crucial play for Bangor took place. The Slaters were on their way into the end zone when a near fumble was saved by junior offensive tackle Josh Hopper.

“It felt great. I knew right after I got the ball to hold it up to show that we still had possession because I knew we were going to score and get the lead,” Hopper said.

It was after that key save that the Slaters were able to score a final touchdown by quarterback Bo Meyers with a successful 2-point conversion by DeBoer, putting the Slaters on top 27-21.

The Slaters successfully shut down the Knights offense for the remainder of the game, making the final score 27- 21 Bangor. This was the Slaters first home win against Pen Argyl since 1997.

Following the game, awards were given to players from both teams.

Sterner was awarded MVP for Pen Argyl as DeBoer, who ran for 228 yards and 2 touchdowns, was awarded MVP for Bangor. Senior defensive tackle Haakon Mathewson lead the team in the game’s tackles and was awarded the game’s Outstanding Lineman Award as well.

The Slaters ended their regular season with a 4-6 record while the Green Knights finished 1-9. However, the Slater’s season didn’t end there.

Thanks to their win against Pen Argyl, the Slaters competed in the Eastern Conference Division 4A Championships November 3 and came out on top against Northwestern Lehigh winning the championship and final game of the season 22-20.
