The 2017 Slater golf team ended their season with an exceptional record of 12-4. With guidance from coaches and captains, they overcame many obstacles and had an unforgettable experience.

“The team this year really impressed me with their work ethic,” coach Stani Schiavone said. “We had a large group of young players who dedicated themselves above and beyond what was required.”

In addition to their dependable coaches, the boys were also motivated by captains senior Adam Beck and sophomore Ethan Saxe.

“Adam and Ethan helped me a lot this season,” freshman Tyler Fey said. “They helped me consistently hit the ball where I wanted it to go and they taught me how to be a great teammate.”

Throughout the season, the boys participated in several highlight matches, including a match against Salisbury where every player hit under 90, guaranteeing them a spot in the Colonial League Championship.

Being able to compete in the championship was exciting enough but placing fourth was an even greater achievement.

“Making it to the Colonial League Championship was definitely our biggest accomplishment this year,” Saxe said. “Last year we had a solid team, but we weren’t able to make it to the championship. This year we spent a lot of time rebuilding and we made it unexpectedly, so placing fourth was a huge deal.”

The golf team will use their success from this season as motivation to make it to Leagues and Districts once again in 2018.
