SABELLA SET TO STAR IN 42nd STREET
March 19, 2018
Starring in her first major role, sophomore Brookel Sabella will debut as Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street on April 13, 14, 15.
Dorothy Brock, a conceited, one-hit-wonder Broadway star, Brock simply cannot dance, lacks the necessary talent for her career, and is only cast in the major Broadway show Pretty Lady because of her love interest’s (Abner Dillon) efforts to get her a lead role. She is eventually cast by director Julian Marsh (Marino Bubba), but when Brock injures her ankle, she is left to sit back and watch young and upcoming actress, Peggy Sawyer (Gianna Graziano), take over her role on stage and in Dillon’s heart.
Frustrated by this new threat in her life, Brock goes to extreme measures to ensure she remains the star of the show.
“This role is very different than any other role I have played because it is much bigger, requires a lot more work, and takes more responsibility than the others,” Sabella said. “It’s so much fun to play Dorothy Brock, and I’m so excited for people to see the show.”
To perfect her persona, Sabella has to put aside her personal feelings and imagine herself in Dorothy Brock’s shoes.
“I don’t necessarily relate to her, but when I try to get into character I just try to think of myself as someone who literally does not care about anyone except herself. It’s kind of rude, but that’s how she is,” Sabella said.
Some of Sabella’s biggest supporters are her co-stars, such as senior Jacob Happel (Abner Dillon), junior Cathianne McKenna (Ann Reilly), and sophomore Logan Holva (Andy Lee). Even with a multitude of characters performing on stage at once, Sabella’s talent is sure to stand out.
“In the show, I am in love with Brookel’s character while she uses me for money in order to score a part in the show, but it is soon revealed that she is involved with someone else,” senior Jacob Happel said. “Working with such a great actress and fantastic singer like Brookel is so much fun.”
Outside of the realm of stage costumes, makeup, and hair, Sabella is also a talented singer who recently participated in district and regional choir. As a result of her outstanding performance, Sabella is moving onto state choir.
“I am mostly excited to make new friends at state choir and spend time in a hotel. It’s a great learning experience, and we have about a month to prepare,” Sabella said. “After states, I will have the opportunity to audition for nationals. I’m honestly really excited for nationals and I hope I get the opportunity to go, but I don’t want to get my hopes up.”
