BOYS OVERTHROW COMPETITION
May 2, 2018
With a history for success, Coach Hopstetter and the Slater throwers have their eyes on the Colonial League prize.
Ending their regular season with a record of 9-1, the Slaters have been successful with the help of returning senior Ryan Bailey, and juniors Eric Lyon and Seth Diorio.
“Although the weather has not been cooperative, the boys dedication and hard work ethic is paying off in their individual and team success,” Hopstetter said.
Whether it’s discus, shot put, or javelin, competitors have been training to their full potential in order to achieve their goals.
Senior Ryan Bailey has his sights set on states this year, as he plans to keep working his hardest to achieve his goals during meets and practices.
“A good work ethic and patience is key. You can not expect to win every meet without working hard and keep practicing until the time is right,” Bailey said.
Returning state participant junior Eric Lyon came into the season confident and working his best at whoever he is put up against.
“I train all year round with my Olympic javelin coach Barry Krammes,” junior Lyon said. “My coach inspires me everyday to push myself over my limit and be the best I can be.”
Closing the season strong, Lyon hit his personal record and beat it by nine inches. It now stands at 190’2. Overall, he’s been throwing consistently in the mid to upper 170 range, and is preparing for what comes next.
“Post-season is where I’ll put up the big numbers because I’ll be throwing off an all weather runway,” junior Lyon said.
Coach Hopstetter pushes the boys to their greatest extent, making sure they stay focused, but still enjoy themselves.
“Coach Hopstetter brings a level of seriousness and fun to both practice and meets while correcting and helping us to make us better competitors,” Lyon said. “My goals are set higher now. I hope to place in both states and nationals and break the school record.”
Be sure to come out and support the boys throwers at their next track meet on Tuesday and Wednesday in Whitehall.
