SLATER SPOTLIGHT: ALEX CARSON
May 18, 2021
How many years have you been a Bangor Slater?
I have been a Bangor Slater for my entire schooling career, so 13 years.
Where do you plan to attend college and what will you be studying? What do you want to do as a future career?
I plan to attend the University of Tampa to study marine science-biology with a minor in leadership studies. After graduating from Tampa, I plan to attend a veterinary school to earn my Doctoral of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and work as an aquatic veterinarian. I hope to spend my career saving marine animals and making a difference in saving our environment.
List the sports, activities, clubs, etc. you did while you were at Bangor High School.
Varsity Softball (2019-present), Track & Field, Senior Class President (class cabinet), Sophomore & Junior Vice President (class cabinet), D11 Sports Sideline Reporter, Hugh O’Brein Youth Leadership (HOBY) alumni, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Quarry Crew Leader , and Channel 21 News.
What three positive words would your friends use to describe you?
Persistent, independent, and tough.
Who will you remember most in Bangor and why?
Mr. Hachtman will always be a person I remember from Bangor. I spent hours on end in his room between his classes and working on my research project my junior year. Even after my research came to a close, I still found myself seeking out his mentorship in many aspects of my academic career. He was one of the first teachers to show they believed in me and pushed me to pursue a STEM career.
What is your best high school memory and why?
The 100th game was definitely my best memory from high school. I was the D11 Sports reporter for Bangor that game so I spent a lot of my time moving between the sidelines and throughout the Quarry Crew. Being surrounded by the whole community and the sea of maroon and white was absolutely surreal. It was also our last true football game together in the Crew before COVID.
What is your worst high school memory?
AP Chemistry. Enough said.
Which band could play the soundtrack to your high school career and why?
I would have the Chainsmokers play the soundtrack to my high school career. My friends and I scream their songs in our cars and they write songs that have a sense of nostalgia to them which is what my high schools days have been filled with.
If there were a movie or TV show made about your high school days, which actor would play your part and why?
I think Jennifer Aniston would play a great Alex Carson in the movie of my high school days. Her humor and sarcasm would definitely portray my personality well.
When you arrive at school in the morning, where is the first place you want to go and why?
The first place I have gone every morning since October of my sophomore year was the Channel 21 News studio. I made some of my best friends there and have loved going off script on the announcements just to drive Mr. Miller crazy at 7 in the morning.
Who influenced you most during high school and why?
Mr. Krohn has been arguably one of the most influential people in my high school career. He was my middle school assistant principal and has grown through our class with us as we have all gone up through the grades. He is always a person I can go to when I need advice and he doesn’t hesitate to tell me what I need to hear rather than just what I want to.
Where do you predict you’ll end up ten years from now and why?
I think I will end up somewhere down south, hopefully somewhere warm and near the coast. I will probably be signed up to be giving a TED talk if I haven’t done that already, and working to make the environment a better place. Oh, and you can’t forget married and raising some D1 babies!
Which event, events will you miss the most and why?
Softball games have always been my favorite events. Playing for the Bangor softball program was always a dream of mine growing up. It has been amazing making those memories with my team and defending our school every time I step on the field.
What is your favorite quote to live by and why?
My actual quote that I live by has a few too many bad words for this…so the quote i’d say I live by is “Keep Fighting.” Life will try to knock you down over and over again. But the only way you lose is if you stop fighting. When you stop, life will just go on without you. So, I try to remember the importance of continuing to work towards the future no matter what happens.
