Spitzer to pursue writing career

Senior Sarah Spitzer has spent her high school career honing in on her creativity. In hopes of eventually publishing her own book, Spitzer is continuing her education by taking a few classes at Northampton Community College.

As a young Slater, Spitzer fell in love with the Avalon: Web of Magic book series, sparking a huge interest in reading, as well as a profound interest in writing.

“I have been writing for a really long time. When I was in 4th grade and I fell upon the book series, I thought it was so interesting that it inspired me into creating my own stories,” Spitzer said.

Ever since then, Spitzer has devoted much of her time on her writing career. In fact, it is one of her favorite things to do in her spare time.

“I absolutely love writing because I get the chance to write about my own world,” Spitzer said. “It’s inspiring to be able to include such a strong and emotional impact on the reader.”

Due to Spitzer’s surplus of talent, her friends encouraged her to take journalism this year as a way to broaden her writing skills.

“People told me that I was a good writer so I decided to join,” Spitzer said. “My favorite task is to write horoscopes because I get to use my creativity.”

Even though Spitzer has been writing since she was a young girl, she just recently became serious about her work.

“Before, I used to just write on an online website under Clara Knight, but since last year, I started writing my own book,” Spitzer said. “The book I’m currently working on is a young adult fantasy that I’ve been writing since junior year and now I’m spending my time revising the chapters.”

In addition to writing her own book, Spitzer is making her own illustrations as well because that has always been a hobby of hers.

“I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember,” Spitzer said. “When I was little I skipped stick figures and went straight to drawing like the professionals.”

While many of Spitzer’s fellow classmates are getting excited to move away for college, she is looking forward to publishing her current book while taking classes at NCC.

“Even though my life after graduation is sort of a mystery, I’m excited to devote my time to trying to get my work published because I’ve worked so hard on it,” Spitzer said.

Due to the fact that Spitzer is taking a different path than others, she has some words of wisdom for her classmates, as well as the underclassmen.

“My advice is to always pursue what you love; you don’t always have to do what everyone else says you should do, instead do what you say is right for you,” Spitzer said.
