Well rounded senior Jackie Hess is continuing her academic and athletic career at Penn State, Hazleton. In order to do so, she must utilize the vital life skills that she obtained from her last four years as a Slater.

Throughout high school, Hess has been very involved with extracurricular activities ranging from Student Government Association (SGA) to Ecology Club.

“From being involved in both of these clubs, I have learned that time management is very important. They have taught me how to prioritize my responsibilities,” Hess said.

In addition to her participation in school clubs, Hess is also a key player in the Lady Slaters softball team.

“I have always loved playing softball. It’s a huge part of my live and I’ve worked extremely hard to be the player that I am. When I play, I don’t have to worry about anything else, I just have fun playing the game I love,” Hess said.

When not in school or on the field, Hess somehow finds time to balance a job as well. She is currently employed at Franklin Hill Vineyards. Between practices, games, club meetings, or work, Hess proves that with dedication, anything is possible.

“In order to stay sane, I try to create a schedule for myself. I like when I have all of my times and my activities laid out in front of me. It makes it easier to process them,” Hess said.

For future years, Hess plans to attend Penn State University this fall. Here, she will obtain a degree in food science in the hopes to one day open her own winery.

“It has been my dream to open my own winery ever since I can remember. My parents owned a small vineyard, and it really sparked my interest. Then, after I got a job at Franklin Hill Vineyards, my love for making wine only grew,” Hess said.

Through her journey, Hess has always looked up to the owner of Franklin Hill Vineyards— Elaine Pivinski. Hess views Pivinski as a role model, as she built her business from the ground up.

“Elaine has taught me that anything is possible, and that it doesn’t matter who you are or what you came from. A great business is built by a great person,” Hess said.

Whether it be in school, on the field, or even in the vineyard, Hess will be sure to succeed in all aspects.
