The annual powderpuff tournament took place in new shape this year on November 18. A record-breaking 400 plus fans witnessed the seniors defeat the juniors 45-0, the sophomores defeat the freshmen 34-0, and some special entertainment from the Slater pep band and an elite six-man cheerleading squad.

The night kicked off with this special cheer squad consisting of five seniors and one junior demonstrating unwavering Slater spirit in their dedication to cheering during the lower forty-degree temperatures (while still rocking the uniforms!) and even withstanding the freezing rain.

With the mentoring of senior cheerleaders Jane Miller and Madison Toth, the boys performed intricate cheers and elaborate stunts that left members of the audience in awe of their surprising coordination and flexibility.

“I always looked forward to seeing my friends play and pull each other’s flags, but watching the guys do surprisingly good toe touches in the girls’ cheer uniforms really just made everyone’s night,” senior Harper Steele said.

The night was then sealed with two exciting games of flag grabbing and impressive efforts from all participating.

Game one took place between the energetic freshmen repping a bright lime green and black, coached by Mr. Kichline, Mrs. Buck, and volunteer junior football players, and the skilled sophomores stylishly wearing purple and gold, under the direction of Mr. Madden, Mr. Buist, and Mr. Krohn.

In this lively back and forth between the underclassmen, though the freshmen were full of spirit as vibrant as their florescent jerseys, the aggressive sophomores ultimately came out on top with a final score of 34-0. Sophomore touchdowns were scored by Megan Engle, Ana Jones, Emma Lautenbacher, Alex Martocci, and Julia Pinter.

The final game of the night featured a long-awaited faceoff against the driven juniors in a bold red and silver, led by coaches Mr. Kichline, Mrs. Buck, and the seasoned seniors in black and Carolina blue, instructed by sophomore sister coaches Mr. Madden, Mr. Buist, and Mr. Krohn.

Game two encompassed both expertly executed routes and well-knit defensive fronts from both teams. Despite the best efforts of the determined junior team, the seniors seized victory with a final score of 45-0 and new title of “2021 Powderpuff Champions.” Senior touchdowns were scored by Kalea Albanese, Mac Karner, Emma Naysmith, Paulina Poels, and Lili Priestaf (2).
