The annual powderpuff tournament featured a battle between the classes and was held at Paul Farnan field November 10. Keeping with tradition, the senior class came out on top with the championship title.

The first round of preliminaries began with a match-up of the seniors and freshmen where the seniors dominated with a final score of 36-0.

The senior’s ground game was strong. With touchdown runs by Kylee Will, Alyson Kiss, and Jackie Hess, the seniors proved a formidable force.

Putting their confidence in quarterback Jackie Hess, the seniors scored through the air as well with a touchdown pass to Kiss in the end zone, and had multiple completions to Montana Cassaro.

“It was really exciting representing the senior class and helping to bring us one step closer to winning the championship,” Cassaro said.

This does not go, of course, without the recognition of the freshmen’s hard work. In perhaps their most challenging game of the night, they put in a hard fight against the senior class.

“For my first year of powderpuff, it felt good to lead the team, they definitely had my back and every one brought something to the game to help us improve. We can only go up from there and we now know what to expect for next year,” freshman quarterback Nicole Smith said.

The second round game was a head-to-head battle between the sophomores and juniors where the juniors were victorious in a 18-7 win.

“It felt amazing to win against the sophomores. It really proved to our class that the right girls are playing and we can get the job done. We all said we wanted to come out strong against the sophomores and show no mercy. Beating them really gave a lot of us the confidence we needed to play the seniors in the finals,” junior Emily Labar said.

With the sophomores as second-year returnees, they had a lot to prove from their past first season.

“I think we put up a great fight against the upperclassmen. Having only 4 practices before the game and playing through the below freezing weather, we were still able to get a touchdown and fight the whole time. Everyone really was going all out, “ sophomore Carly Amerman said.

It was then that the sophomores and freshmen played for the 3rd place title in the consolation game. In an exciting back and forth battle, the sophomores squeaked out a 20-13 victory.

With a last minute touchdown run by Amerman, the sophomores proved they were in the game for the win every moment.

In the championship game, the junior and senior classes faced off and the seniors claimed the championship title with a 25-8 win.

While Labar had a standout performance and put up the only junior touchdown, a full team effort by the seniors proved too much to handle.

“We all knew the plays and executed them,” Hess said. “We all helped each other out, especially considering there were not many of us, we did a good job with that.”

Each senior player was key in their win, and they could not have done it without working as a team.

“It was really a great way to end four years of playing with the same girls. Starting as freshmen we had no idea how to even play the game. By senior year we knew how to work together and come out as champions. It was really special,” senior Kaitlyn Karasek said.
