The Slaters ended their last season with a record of 8-3, advanced to districts, and sent two wrestlers to regionals; the team is looking to continue their success.

This season, the Slaters have a change up in their coaching staff. Long-time coach Rick Thompson retired from his legendary career as a Bangor coach and was replaced by familiar face Richie Smith.

“I’m very excited to have Richie as a head coach. He has taught me so much about wrestling, and more importantly about life. He’s a person I strongly look up to,” senior Tommy McKeough (285 lbs.) said.

The boys will miss Coach Thomspon, but they are excited to see the new elements Coach Smith will bring to their season.

“Richie is going to be introducing a lot of new workouts and exercises that will keep practices exciting,” senior Eddie Hay (152 lbs.) said.

Seniors Haakon Mathewson and Eddie Hay have the honor of leading their team as captains this year.

“We plan to lead mainly by example. Richie gives us a lot of room to lead and push everyone else on the team to be better,” Hay said. “Haakon and I also are some of the more experienced wrestlers on the team, so we are able to show a lot of moves and help the younger kids prepare for big matches.”

After putting in work during the offseason, the boys are ready for another impressive year.

“We are a lot better than last year. We got most of the lineup back and we are ready for the season,” junior Joey Schrader (195 lbs.) said.

The Slater Nation should expect to see big things from the wrestling team as they begin their season.
