So, Mr. Krohn can sing.

The annual Rock Band competition was a smashing success once again this year. With headlining performances from Mr. Krohn, Mr. Madden, and other talented students, the entire crowd was rocking and rolling all afternoon in the Craig Payne theater.

Kicking off the show, “Trever’s Mom” featuring Mason Cruz, Owen Jennings, Michael Coleman, and Trevor Weidman performed the hit song “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell. The crowd went wild over this upbeat tune that had everyone singing along.

Bringing an edgier, darker mood to the stage, “Raymond’s Noodles” grabbed their guitars and began to perform “Down with the Sickness” by Disturbed. Singer Jackie Greene emerged from the dark audience in a black fur coat, thigh-high black suede boots, ripped fishnet stockings, and her signature black lipstick. This iconic look brought a new sense of pride and commitment to the Rock Band competition.

“I knew I wanted a very dark, dramatic, daunting look to match the mood of the song. That day, I woke up extra early to slick my hair to side and to add the extra layer of midnight black makeup to my eyes and lips. My gothic and dark appearance really brought my character out, and helped me perform to the best of my scream-o abilities,” Jackie Greene said.

Debuting another memorable performance was Akash Sareen, Austin Medina, Paolo Bartolucci, and Nick Mazzella, also known as “We Love Our Mommies.” When singer Sareen grabbed the microphone and the iconic tune of Spongebob’s “Best Day Ever” started over the loud speaker, the crowd erupted. It was this infamous performance that earned the group the winning title.

From one historic performance to the next, Zak Kozinski, Mason Medina, Chase Taylor, and Alberto Maciel, also known as the “Diddley Dees,” took to the stage. Kozinski’s angelic like country voice nailed one of the crowd’s favorite songs, “What Was I Thinking” by Dierks Bentley.

“I felt nervous since it was my first time performing in front of a large group of people, but I felt like me up on that stage. I also felt that my band members did a really great job as well,” Zak Kozinski said.

Continuing the tradition, “Product,” featuring Mr. Madden, Mr. Krohn, GG Murgia, and Paolo Bartolucci blew away the audience with their near perfect rendition of “More Than A Feeling” by Boston. Normally, dearly beloved teacher Mr. Perelli would have been right up there with the band, but appendicitis unfortunately took the life of his weak appendix, leaving him to recover, music-less, at home.

“I often said that nothing could keep me from performing in Rock Band, however, I have recently learned that exploding internal organs will, in fact, keep me from attending Rock Band,” Mr. Perelli said.

When all was said and done, “We Love Our Mommies” came out on top as the best overall band and performance. The joyous moment was one to remember for this loved band.

“I felt amazing. We worked hard this year. Last year we felt that we were robbed on any awards so this year our band put in the extra work, getting together on a late night grinding until we hit near perfection,” Akash Sareen said. “I love performing and it gives me a rush every time. Getting two awards this year was the best feeling ever.”

Rock Band 2018 is one for the books that the entire Slater population will never forget, and neither will Mr. Perelli’s appendix.
