Kind, funny, and responsible senior Bella Ostrander has spent her high school years balancing academics, leadership, athletics, and multiple jobs. With a strong work ethic and a clear plan for the future, she is preparing to turn her passion for helping others into a career in nursing.
What activities (sports, clubs, jobs) have you been involved in during high school?
I have participated as a JV and varsity cheerleader for two years and have been involved in Leo Club, Hiking Club, LitMag, and Track and Field for one year. Additionally, I am currently the vice president of the National Honor Society. Jobs-wise, I worked at a vineyard for a year and at an ice cream and food shop for almost two years. Currently, I work for a chiropractic office, where I have been for a year and a half, and I also have a job as an in-home nurse for a dementia patient.
What are your plans after high school (college, career, military, etc.)?
I plan to complete my prerequisites at NCC and then attend St. Luke’s School of Nursing to obtain my Registered Nurse (RN) certification. After that, I plan to continue my education by pursuing my BSN through Moravian University’s bridge program with St. Luke’s.
What activity has meant the most to you and why?
Being a cheerleader in high school meant the most to me because it was an incredible experience. Cheerleading provided a space where I could express my loud and funny self. Although we faced challenging practices, games, and difficult days, there was nothing I loved more than being on the track on a Friday night cheering. I wish I could have continued as a cheerleader, but I was unable to do so due to work commitments. This activity gave me purpose and helped me realize how much I am capable of.
Describe a specific moment or memory from that activity.
One special memory was when we competed in the Colonial League Cheer Championship during my freshman year and won first place. The excitement, energy, and hard work we put into that competition were incredible. We entered with no idea what to expect, but when we took the floor for the first time, we achieved first place. The entire team was thrilled to be named Colonial League Champions, and that experience is something I will never forget.
What is one challenge you faced and how did you handle it?
One challenge I faced was the transition from focusing solely on school and cheerleading to starting a job. Balancing school, cheer practice, work, and homework was often overwhelming. I decided to address this challenge by quitting cheerleading to better focus on my job and schoolwork, which would help me achieve the degree I aspire to attain.
What is your best high school memory and why?
My best high school memory is probably the Bangor vs. Pen Argyl game during my sophomore year. That night was more exciting and fun than I could have ever imagined. Cheering on the team from the track and motivating the crowd was an experience like no other. Being a part of that game and its tradition is something I will always cherish, as it truly reflects the essence of high school and the spirit of the Bangor community.
Who is someone who had a big impact on you and why?
I would say my dad had the biggest impact on me. From the time I was young, he always knew I was “super smart,” as he likes to say, so he pushed me to be the best I could be. Once I got to high school, things got harder, but he pushed me to go to school, cheer, do track and field, and have a job, and I am so grateful for it. Because of my dad, I am leaving school with 15 college credits and have already fast-tracked my degree by almost a whole year. My dad pushed me to do the most and be the best, and I could not thank him enough. He also taught me about working and saving my money so I will not have to worry about my next paycheck needing to come through, but instead that I have a safety net in case I need it.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I see myself working in a doctor’s office or hospital with my RN, BSN, and NP certifications behind my name. I hope to be married, have a steady job, and have kids.
