Approachable, caring, and genuine, Bangor Area High School senior Brooklyn Docherty has filled her high school years with music, leadership, and school spirit. Whether performing under the Friday night lights or planning for a future in education, Docherty has made the most of every opportunity while staying true to herself.
What activities (sports, clubs, jobs) have you been involved in during high school?
Throughout high school, I have been involved in many bands, including Symphonic Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, County Band, Pit Orchestra, and Pep Band. I was a part of the PMEA District 10 Choir. I am in Slater Chorale. I was part of the girls’ volleyball club. I was a varsity cheerleader my freshman year. And you can find me working at the Trolley Shops Restaurant and Ice Cream Shop!
What are your plans after high school (college, career, military, etc.)?
I plan to attend Millersville University, majoring in early childhood education and possibly minoring in music.
What activity has meant the most to you and why?
Marching Band is the activity that probably means the most to me. It brought me many friends, taught me many lessons, and Friday Night Lights was something I looked forward to every weekend.
Describe a specific moment or memory from that activity.
A moment from marching band is, once again, Friday Night Lights. I loved playing tunes from the stands and being as rowdy as possible. I liked being able to express my personality. I especially loved performing our shows during halftime. I loved having the opportunity to show my school and community how hard we have worked to put on an amazing show. I was also a bit excited to show off my solo.
What is one challenge you faced and how did you handle it?
A challenge I had to face was simply stepping out of my comfort zone. Looking back, I wish I had done more in the first three years of my high school career, but I was just too shy to do anything. I faced it by simply surrounding myself with the people I know wouldn’t judge or put me down, but rather lift me up and have fun. I had to realize that what people thought about me didn’t matter and that I have such wonderful opportunities to be giving up over embarrassing moments. I’d rather be embarrassed than miss out on a fun, fulfilling life.
What is your best high school memory and why?
I think if I had to choose one memory, it would be the Florida trip for the music department. It was my first time on a plane, I just had such an incredible time at Disney, and it felt great to perform for both the band and choir. It was officially the last time I would be marching with our band, and that was bittersweet to think about. I also got to explore with different groups of people, and I think it helped me realize I made the right choice in friends.
If a movie were made about your life, what would it be called and who would play you? Why?
If a movie were made about my life, I think the actress playing me would be Rebel Wilson. I think she is hilarious and would have no issue portraying my bright personality. I think the title would be Second Chair, Main Character simply because of my spot in band, but also because it’s all about my life. That’s the least corny name I could find, but I kind of like it.
Who is someone who had a big impact on you and why?
My mom has made the biggest impact in my entire life, but she especially helped me throughout high school. She was there when I was stressed, upset, angry, and showed up to more than enough events. I’d also like to recognize Mr. Horne and Mr. DiMinico for helping me improve on my skills and for helping me become a better person, teaching me leadership, and setting amazing examples of what a great teacher should look like.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I will be 28 years old. I see myself as a kindergarten teacher at Five Points Elementary School. I would love to provide students from my hometown the same, or a better, education than I received. If that does not occur, I hope to be teaching anywhere. I also see myself hopefully settling down in a beautiful home and starting my own family.
